چکیده

High-resolution remote sensing using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is one of the most promising technologies for grasping damage information of built-up areas under independence of weather condition and sun illumination. A strong earthquake occurred in the coast of Algeria on May 21, 2003. The cities of Boumerdes and Zemmouri were the most extensively damaged areas. Canadian SAR satellite, RADARSAT, observed Boumerdes area by the fine beam-mode, which captures the earth surface with approximately 8 m resolution, on 4 days after the event. European SAR satellite, ERS, whose resolution is approximately 30m, also observed the same area on June 7, 2003. In this paper, we investigated the characteristics of damaged areas in the both SAR images by visual interpretation and clarified the effect of spatial resolution for the detection of damaged buildings. Then, we applied our automated damage detection technique, which was developed based on the data set of the 1995 Kobe earthquake, to the SAR images of Boumerdes. Then the accuracy of the proposed method was examined by comparing the result of the analysis with the identified damaged buildings by visual interpretation using QuickBird images.

Use of Interferometric Satellite Sar for Earthquake Damage Detection

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is one of the most promising remote sensing technologies since it is not affected by clouds and lights. The SAR interferometric analysis, using phase information of backscattering echoes from objects on the earth’s surface, is successfully employed to quantify relative ground displacements due to natural disasters. In addition, the complex coherence derived from t...

Detection of damage to building side-walls in the 2011 Tohoku, Japan earthquake using high-resolution TerraSAR-X images [8892-37]

Building damage such as to side-walls or mid-story collapse is often overlooked in vertical optical images. Hence, in order to observe such building damage modes, high-resolution SAR images are introduced considering the side-looking nature of SAR. In the 2011 Tohoku, Japan, earthquake, a large number of buildings were collapsed or severely damaged due to repeated tsunamis. One of the important...

Estimation of Earthquake Damage Through Radar Interferometry (Case study: Bam 2003 Earthquake)

The estimate of the damage caused by the earthquake and other natural disasters in the first days after the occurrence of these events can provide a quick damages assessment and help to manage the crisis. Several methods are available to investigate the extent of earthquake’s damage. Optical remote sensing, photogrammetric methods (UAVs and LIDARs), radar interferometry (InSAR) and field observ...

Disaster Risk Evaluation and Damage Detection Using Remote Sensing Data for Global Rescue Operations

In this study, for supporting global rescue operations, we will propose a new earthquake damage detection method, based on a combination of earthquake damage estimation using earthquake information (magnitude, location of source, detailed ground condition, and attenuation equation for distance) and change detection by means of remote sensing data. First, to find collapsed buildings and houses o...
